What is Medical Professional Coding?
Medical coding continues to be a growing profession, with current predictions of employment opportunities increasing 30% or more in the next two years. The Government regulates the payment of medical claims and audits medical records frequently to ensure compliance in reporting and payment.
Because of the potential for fraud, abuse or errors in payment due to incorrect coding, medical coders must be certified as having the knowledge necessary to support accurate coding and reimbursement. Inaccurate payments to medical providers can result in violations of the False Claims Act and recovery of the incorrect payments.
AAPC Certified Professional Coder
To achieve a professional coder certification, you must have a high level of knowledge in medical terminology and anatomy. You will be reading medical records that have been written by physicians and other professionals who speak this language fluently. At Texas Career Center, we provide the tools to succeed as a certified professional coder.
A certified professional coder must also have a general understanding of insurance and the regulatory mandates associated with coding, as well as a working knowledge in the various forms of Medicare, Medicaid and commercial insurance benefits. This knowledge is a foundation for the courses that teach coding; as they prepare the student for success in the more advanced areas of learning medical coding and the preparation to sit for and pass the national AAPC Certified Professional Coder examination.
